El Paso shareholders seek to block vote on merger

El Paso Corp’s chief executive tainted the company’s proposed $21 billion sale to rival oil pipeline company Kinder Morgan Inc by not disclosing his personal interest in acquiring certain El Paso assets, El Paso shareholders argued on Thursday.
They told a Delaware chancery court that these alleged conflicts of interest, plus those of deal adviser Goldman Sachs Group Inc, so badly marred the merger that the court should block a shareholder vote scheduled for next month.
El Paso may be in running for Triple-A baseball team

El Paso, a city without affiliated minor league baseball since 2004, is said to be a major player in an attempt to buy the Triple-A baseball team from Tucson.
The Tucson club, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres and a member of the Pacific Coast League, is a good bet to be sold some time in the next six weeks. An original deal in Escondido, Calif., has fallen through and a group of El Pasoans is said to be in the mix trying to buy the team. The group would build a privately funded stadium in the Downtown area, most probably around Union Depot. Teams at the Triple-A level are usually one step away from the major leagues.
Voters Flock to El Paso County Caucuses

Senator Rick Santorum (R) defeated his competitors in El Paso County during Tuesday night’s caucuses in Colorado. Early returns suggest Santorum won in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri Tuesday.
Santorum was the clear winner in El Paso county, outscoring Mitt Romney by more than1700 votes. Romney entered Tuesday’s contests with back-to-back wins in earlier caucuses. Tuesday, registered Republicans spent their evening comparing notes on the GOP candidates in caucuses around Colorado.
El Paso school chief fraud trial set for June

A federal judge has set a June 18 trial for former El Paso school district superintendent Lorenzo Garcia, who’s charged with multiple counts of fraud related to school programs that receive federal money.
Garcia is free on bond and has pleaded innocent to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, two counts of mail fraud and another count of aiding and abetting theft.
El Paso police: Boy shot by officer had scissors

A 15-year-old boy shot by police on Tuesday allegedly threatened an officer with a pair of metallic scissors when he was shot in the upper arm and in the lower leg, police officials said Thursday.
The El Paso Police Department continues to investigate the shooting, which occurred during a foot chase after an afternoon beer run in South-Central El Paso. The officer involved in the shooting, Sgt. Alonzo Torres, was placed on administrative duty pending the results of an investigation.
El Paso Electric Announces Quarterly Dividend

The Board of Directors of El Paso Electric (NYSE:EE) has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.22 per share. The dividend is payable on March 30, 2012 to shareholders of record on March 15, 2012.

El Paso Zoo’s Oldest Sea Lion Dies, Community Mourns

The oldest California sea lion at the El Paso Zoo died on Thursday due to a possible veterinarian error.
Last Thursday, Cleo, the oldest of the bunch, was given too large of a dose of anesthesia when zoo officials were attempting to perform a medical check for a separate illness. More >
El Paso Zoo sea lion dies

The El Paso Zoo is in mourning after the death of its oldest California sea lion, Cleo, at age 25. The female sea lion died Thursday night from complications from anesthesia that was administered during a medical check, Zoo Director Steve Marshall said.
Sea lions typically have a life expectancy of 15 to 25 years, he said.

Beer runs decrease 17%, El Paso police say

Beer runs, one of the most prevalent crimes in El Paso, dropped by about 17 percent last year, according to El Paso Police Department figures. Beer runs — in which a thief grabs beer and flees without paying — dropped in all of the city’s police regions last year except for the Northeast, which had a 4 percent increase.
This crime is so common that photos of unidentified beer-run suspects are regularly posted on the Police Department’s website.
